Jennifer and Undiagnosed Chronic Lead Poisoning at Sandals Negril:
As we’ve been going through all these memories and photos, it’s really taken us for the ride of our lives now that we are in treatment and are addressing all the undiagnosed issues we were dealing with on this vacation in 2012. This was one of those pictures that really caught our attention with Jennifer. The swelling started while she was stationed at the 267th Combat Communications Squadron in the 2001-2005 timeframe but was easily blown off as weight gain initially. Until Jennifer realized that no matter what she did, she could not lose the extra weight and it kept packing on. Well, it all makes sense now. It wasn’t weight, it was inflammation.
The entire body was riddled with lead and of course it’s going to create inflammation because the body is trying to fight off a foreign invader, unsuccessfully. Lead is dangerous to humans because the body cannot fight it off or expel it without medical intervention and detox. No amount of “eating right” and “exercise” was going to help her. And “your labs are normal” didn’t help Jennifer’s morale when she knew something was seriously wrong and no one would help her with additional testing to find answers. By the time we realized the State of Maine healthcare system is a huge failure, it was too late and we were forced to sell the property and find healthcare.
Jennifer fought hard to find answers with nothing but gaslighting, misdiagnoses, and people who were not invested whatsoever. Looking back, it feels like these medical personnel were contributing to both our deaths, and we don’t say that lightly. We spent 15 years looking for answers in Maine. And right up until the very end, even in a State endemic with ticks, the Bethel Family Health Center denied us testing for what we believed was Lyme disease at the time. They denied additional testing and told Jennifer she needed to drink more water. Turns out, both of us had tick borne disease and multiple co-infections due to false negatives and a delay in treatment.
